Global Encryption Day (GED) is an annual global day of advocacy, awareness, and action dedicated to defending and promoting strong encryption. Organized by the Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) alongside partners like the Internet Society (ISOC), the initiative brings together technologists, civil society groups, businesses, and digital rights advocates worldwide.
Encryption is the underlying technology that keeps everyday digital interactions safe. GED focuses heavily on highlighting its real-world impacts:
Protecting Everyday Users: It safeguards personal messages, online banking, and private data from being intercepted by hackers or malicious actors.
Defending Marginalized & Vulnerable Groups: Strong encryption is critical for the safety of journalists, activists, and survivors of gender-based violence, ensuring they can communicate without fear of surveillance or exposure.
Economic Resilience: Unencrypted data is a major driver of costly cyber breaches. Adhering to strong encryption standards protects businesses, builds digital trust, and keeps organizations compliant with major privacy frameworks like GDPR or ISO 27001.
On and around October 21, organizations worldwide host localized workshops, policy briefings, and hands-on tool clinics. These activities focus heavily on capacity building—translating complex technical concepts into local languages and running practical sessions for non-technical or rural communities to ensure digital safety is accessible to everyone.
